Is a Home Business Right For You?
Unemployment is hitting levels not seen in years, but this time people have opportunities that they didn’t have in the past: starting a home business.
Not that long ago, if you wanted a home business you had be highly skilled in a specific field such as accounting, architecture, landscaping, etc. But now, just about anyone with drive can run a home business thanks to the information age and our computers.
Working from home has wonderful benefits, and if you’ve thought about running a home-based business no doubt you’ve pictured yourself sitting at your computer with sweats and a t-shirt. And, no doubt, there are plenty of people working at home wearing that uniform.
But there is more to consider than simply comfortable attire. Working from home isn’t all a piece of cake. Here are some things to consider—the good and the bad—before you start you home-based business.
-Do you have a place to work? Before open your home-based business, it’s a good idea to have a place in your home where you can set up an office. It takes more than simply plugging in a computer. Ideally, you should have a separate room in your house that is away from the activity center of your home where you won’t get distracted by other family members.
-Can you focus? Most people think they can work from home, but some find out the hard way that they can’t. While it’s nice to have flexible hours and work whenever you want, you do have to work and not be easily distracted by other things that need to be done around the house. Even if you find you cannot work from home, nowadays there are options for the home-based worker: offices you can rent at reasonable rates.
-Tax benefits. If you have a home office, you are eligible for all sorts of deductions that pertain to the running of your house, including utility costs and capital expenses such as office equipment and your computer. But in order to qualify for most of these benefits, you must have a room in your home that is used exclusively as an office.
-Less stress. Or is that more stress? Many people who operate home-based businesses see their income fluctuate from week to week, so you should be prepared, mentally and financially for this. That’s why it’s a good idea to keep your day job before you dedicate yourself to your home business to make certain you can cover all your expenses.
-No office politics. No more boss. No more annoying co-workers. No more socializing in the office. It can be lonely, but many people are more productive when working at home and those who are successful wouldn’t trade their solitude for anything.
-No benefits. Remember, when you work for yourself, you lose benefits. You should factor in the cost of health insurance before you start your business. Nowadays there are many fairly inexpensive health care plans for individuals, so shop around for what is best for you and your family.

5 Stars Great tax program
This is the best tax software there is - Period! It is very easy to use, and walks you through every step of the process. I had tried another tax software product, and it was very confusing and counter-intuitive. I had my own business for part of the year, and two W-2s. My wife is disabled and had a few 1099s. What could have been a very confusing return was very easy with TurboTax. We also had to file an amended return, and that was very easy as well. We will definitley be purchasing TurboTax again next year!
1 Star Decent software - but let us down when e-filing at tax time!
I liked the software itself. Being the first year I used it, I thought I’d start being a regular TT customer.
Then it was April 17 2007 and I tried to e-file. The servers would not respond ALL DAY. There were no admins to be reached on the support sites or the forums (except for one who said “I don’t know what is the problem and I have nothing to tell you”).
One major failing with this software is that it cannot AUTOMATICALLY try to connect. If it fails, it says “try again in 10 minutes”. Which I’ve had to do all night.
Now - I will miss my tax deadline and have spent 6 hours at my computer trying to get connected. Mail is not an option now as my car is gone.
This is a major failure of the company and an utter lack of support, since their officials apparently couldn’t be bothered to come in to work on tax day to offer us any solutions.
I will not buy again.
1 Star Upgrade problems for Macintosh users.
This is a product that is dependent on constant upgrades because the most current version of the 2006 tax forms are often not available when it first comes out. That is the nature of the product.
However, for the third year in a row, many Macintosh users have run into problems with their automated online form upgrade process. If the automated upgrade process does not work, you can do the upgrade manually, but that is a somewhat complex process. Alternatively, you can order a snail mail version of the upgraded program, if you can ever get through to the phone number you have to call. They always seem to be encountering a large volume of calls no matter what time you call.
Its a great product once you get it upgraded to contain the most recent version of the forms. I wonder if the automated upgrade process works for Windows users? At any rate, until they fix the automated upgrade process, an important part of the software, I have to rate it as low as possible.
1 Star Buyer beware
Having used Turbo Tax since 1990 I feel that I am qualified to comment on it.
I have also used Quicken, Quicken Deluxe, Quicken Home & Business, QuickBooks Pro 2003 & QuickBooks Premier Contractors Edition. The Turbo Tax product seems to get more user UN-FRIENDLY each year. The navigation features do not allow as much mobility thru the program as they did in the late nineties and early 2000’s. Like I said I WAS using QuickBooks Pro 2003 until tax time last year. I purchased Turbo Tax Home & Business like I had for the past 4 years, and really got a shock when I found out that it would not import my data from QuickBooks Pro 2003. Three year old software that was not compatible with Turbo Tax in 2006(actually 2005 tax year). I ended up purchasing QuickBooks Premier Contractors Edition 2006
($280+) in order to upgrade just to get my taxes done. Intuit in my opinion is a perfect example of major corporate greed. I am done with them and will purchase TaxCut this year.
5 Stars Turbo Tax
I have used this product for the last three years and I am very satisfied
with it and recommend it highly.

5 Stars Best Version
Just a quick review to say that this is the only version of this software I can recommmend. The later versions fixed things about this program that were NOT broken.
This software is VERY user friendly and if you don’t want or need all the ‘fluff’ that comes with the ‘upgraded’ versions (like color choices and misc. furniture selections, etc) then it’s not worth having to navigate through the endless, complicated tutorials that are necessary to draw out a simple room.
I also use this software when considering additions to our home or workspace; I even use it to draw out an existing room before I buy new furniture and wonder how it would all fit properly since you can virtually lay out everything on paper without having to move a thing (or re-move it, again and again). It’s easy to see how large a piece of furniture you can buy that would fit the space your looking to fill.
I am a home-user only and I love this program.
1 Star old version
This version of 3D Home Architect will not work on Vista 64. I tried to contact the supplier but he had no listed phone number. I sent a letter and received no response. I called Broderland’s answering machine which told me to call someone else. The price was indeed too good to be true.
5 Stars The easiest house plan program ever
It’s a great program! Everything is super simple, from drawing walls to resizing windows, doors, furniture, etc. Very good for beginners. I used to have it years ago, then lost the CD somehow. I tried other, much newer programs, but they were all so aggravating in comparison. With this one, you can get started right away without having to check the manual every few seconds. The graphics are not top notch, and it can be finicky with drag and drop item placement, but other than that, it’s great.
4 Stars 3D Home Architect Ver3
This is an older software version but easy to use and compatible with XP. The version 2 was fine but I had problems saving files with MS-XP. From a cost viewpoint it’s certainly a best-buy.
5 Stars Just what I wanted
I bought this product for my dad, who couldn’t find his cd-rom of an older version of this same product. He is actually a full time self employed carpenter, and really, given my choice I would have got him more professional software. However, for just ten dollars (including the shipping!) i was able to get him the exact thing he wanted. also it includes a landscape feature, which has my mom excited. my dad is very pleased with the software.
